On our last day in Los Glaciares the only bridge that gives access to Lago del Desert collapsed from the bad weather and we changed our plan to visit another area of pristine nature, Los Huemules Reserve. It borders Los Glaciares NP, is very well protected, has even better marked trails, and receives less visitors. This is Rio del Diablo, which has a milky green colour indicating its supply by a glacier, the Glaciar Caglerio.
Laguna Azul was the main sight of our short hike, and it was reached after a short leisurely hike of around 1 hr. It really is quite azul in contrast with the green and yellow vegetation, as it is not glacial in origin.
Cerro Electrico towers over Laguna Azul.
Its water tumbles over the edge like an infinity pool.
Adjacent to the Laguna Azul is, poetically, Laguna Verde, a green laguna. There were countless birds over the lake and it was an experience to watch them from the edge of the otherwise tranquil lake.
Another notable place just outside Los Glaciares is Laguna Nimez in El Calafate, around half an hour walk from most hotels. Being a major habitatĀ for birds, it has an abundance of flamingos and a large variety of other avian species.
From its northern edge one can see the turquoise Lago Argentino separated from the laguna by marshes and a beach.
This strip of land is also filled with bird life.
This was at around sunset, everyone was busy digging in.
